so, i've got this calendar from last year full of james dean photos. i can't throw it out, but i don't know what to do with it -- aside from sticking it in a drawer to forget about.
i can't afford to frame the photos (nor do i have the wall space). the photos are large (as with any larger wall calendar). does anyone have any ideas of what to do with the photos? maybe decoupage a cardboard box (i've got one from amazon -- the gift boxes that they use -- that's sturdy)...?
I've used calenders to decopage boxes before (both cardboard and wooden ones from ikea) and it turned out great. make sure the mod podge sticks to the shiny paper though.
Posted by: rachel at February 19, 2003 08:51 AMi'm glad you've got experience with cardboard and decoupage! unless i come up with something else, i'll cover my box.
Posted by: michelle at February 19, 2003 10:43 AMyou have a xyron, don't you? that's another idea, i made giant stickers out of calenders before using my xyron 900 and that worked too.
Posted by: rachel at February 20, 2003 01:53 PMunfortunately, the photos are too large for my xyron... but that's a great idea -- didn't even occur to cover a box in sticker form! i have a paris calendar that's about book size... that would look great on another amazon gift box that is much smaller than my other one!!
great ideas rachel!
Posted by: Michelle at February 21, 2003 01:44 AMWhy not laminate the photos that you like best and make placemats?
Posted by: sandy at February 21, 2003 05:53 AMThe heaviness of calendar paper is great for folding into gift bags or small gift boxes. I did this with my Spam calendar.
Posted by: R at February 21, 2003 07:17 AMplacemats -- good idea! although the photos are a little small for that, i guess you could back them with a nice/colorful/fun paper and laminate it all ... that'd be cool!
and, i had thought about making boxes or envelopes out them. is there a good place with templates for various boxes online?
Posted by: Michelle at February 21, 2003 10:43 AMOrigami! (heh-heh!) Check the local library! They've got easy instructions and the boxes have bottoms & tops! And, in fact, there are other methods of folding to make gift bags!
Posted by: Peppermint Tina *: ) at February 21, 2003 12:17 PMi say, why stop at a cardboard box? buy a cheap wooden table at a garage sale, paint it black and modge-podge the top with james. ooh la la. there's a bar here in minneapolis with a coffee table of b&w starlet headshots that looks super swanky.
Posted by: amy at February 21, 2003 02:59 PMThey would make great envelopes too, I would think. Since it's thicker paper, maybe they could be used for cd's or something similar. I found a few free misc. envelope templates online:
http://www.blossomswap.com/envelopes.html (these are for seeds, so they're smaller, but you could enlarge them on a copier)
http://mirkwooddesigns.com/templates.htm (these are some fun and different shapes)

(links to a few other template sites)
I saw a neat project on changing rooms or some such show where they used pictures like from a calendar to make hangers. You glue the picture to some wood and cut around it with a jig saw. I’m not sure if that could be doable.
You could glue the pictures to heavy card or something similar and then make a 3-D display stuck into a block of foam.
You could glue the pictures to cardstock and then decoupage to make it nice and stiff and cut into a puzzle when dry. Maybe send some puzzles as gifts in envelops made of other pages.
i wasn't too keen on actually sending them as envelopes (besides, i think they're really too big for that)... good links for templates!!
but, i love the puzzle idea!! that'd be fun with any type of photo or image!
Posted by: Michelle at February 26, 2003 09:06 PMEnvelopes are easy, just carefully take apart a regular one in the size you want and trace it, then use a glue stick or double sided tape to put it back together. You could also make nifty gift boxes out of the pages, back with cardstock if the pages aren't stiff enough. This site has tons of great templates:

Posted by: wendy at February 27, 2003 09:44 AMYou could make a calender on the computer and glue it to the one from last year and use it all over again.
Posted by: Lisa at February 27, 2003 06:50 PMI'm just wondering have any of you ladies decopaged a shoe box and lid and found that they were tacky. After I let dry, I put the lid on and found that it dragged and has pulled up paper on the corner edges. Am I doing somthing wrong? I used wrapping paper and modge podge. Would appreciate some help!
Thank you!
