October 07, 2002

among other things this weekend, i finally transformed that ugly, free aol cd tin, that came several months ago in the mail, into a beautiful little storage box!
here's my experience and directions!
brava! The paper is a very elegant solution.
Posted by: Anita Rowland at October 7, 2002 07:15 AMhey! i used that exact same origami paper for my own decoupaging experiment - with an altoid tin! nice tip on the spray paint by the way - i will definitely have to do that next time.
Posted by: blue at October 7, 2002 03:26 PMgod, i love your little craft projects!
Posted by: jodi at October 10, 2002 01:46 PMah, so that's what i should be doing with all of my aol tins instead of chucking them.. ;)
Posted by: doricey at October 10, 2002 07:13 PMThis is a great idea. It really turned out nice.
Posted by: kane at October 12, 2002 02:20 AMi was saving up those tins for just this kind of project... hurrah!
Posted by: andrea at October 14, 2002 10:51 PMDo you have to use the matte Modge Podge? Will the original Modge Podge work okay?
Posted by: buttercup at October 17, 2002 12:39 PMi just used the matte modge podge because i don't like glossy finishes on anything. it's just a preference. i'm sure the original modge podge would work just fine.
Posted by: Michelle at October 17, 2002 12:49 PMWow I tossed the useless AOL CD and was wondering what I could do with the cool tin I received in the mail last week. No wonder AOL-Time Warner are in such a financial bind. Great Idea you have there....................
Posted by: Sylvia at October 20, 2002 10:22 AMthat is so neat! the origami paper is gorgeous, i thought it was fabric when i first saw it. i'm jealous.
Posted by: seraphine at October 28, 2002 06:52 PMI was wondering how do I get the AOL TINS I have been looking all over forever. Please help me find some! or get some! or show me where to get them!
Posted by: evan at February 6, 2003 08:34 PMEvan, I have a stash of AOL tins. I am very willing to part with some of them. Email me.
Posted by: Tracy at February 18, 2003 10:45 AMwhere can I purchase AOL tins in large quanities

Posted by: t om mulhern at March 27, 2003 06:50 AMGreat project idea. You can actually by CD tins very similar to the AOL CD Tin. They are available at the above link in both silver and white. This would simplify some of the stages of this project.
Posted by: Jeff at April 3, 2003 11:04 AMSorry the link is http://www.effectuality.com/Unprinted_Packaging/cd_tin.shtml
Posted by: Jeff at April 3, 2003 11:05 AMwhy pay for something that's sent to you for free? i guess if you're one of the people that unfortunately never get the tins in the mail, then buy them... but you can generally ask for them and people are happy to pass them along.
Posted by: Michelle at April 3, 2003 12:31 PMI would like to have some tins. The project looks very fun. I never get any tins at all in the mail.
Posted by: Joey at April 4, 2003 12:56 PMWow! It looks amazing; great job!!
Too bad they do not stick those tins in the mailboxes over here (in Germany). :( We only get those plastic things [that are like ... ehm, where they put in DVDs ;)] ...
But again: It's an awesome idea!! Yay!
:)
DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHO TO REMOVE MODGE PODGE? PLEASE HELP!

Posted by: Gloria at June 7, 2003 10:18 AMOur apartment complex was recently over run with those AOL tins... most people see it as "junk mail" and so they were throwing them away or leaving them on top of the mailbox area. I scooped them all up, not having ANY idea what to do with them.
I ended up painting a few with acrylic paint (worked pretty well) and I have a friend who took some and was able to sand off the logos for a brushed metal look... I have to try that one!
Posted by: Mia at June 13, 2003 11:11 AMThat looks great! I used an aol tin to make a homemade eyeshadow palette, and it works great! I just glued all my eyeshadow pans into the tin, and voila! Now I'm trying to find where I can get more tins, lol.
Posted by: chevonne at July 13, 2003 09:49 PMWhat a great idea! I get those tins all the time. I found your project while searching for a 20-hole eyeshadow palette I'd seen in a catalogue (I'm a makeup artist who's always running out of palette space), this popped up and I just had to check it out. I always feel guilty throwing those tins out with the rest of the junk mail, so there is a box of them (maybe a dozen by now) beside my computer. Now I know what to do with them. Thanks to whoever it was who came up with the palette idea.
Posted by: Zanne at September 18, 2003 02:39 PMHi
Love the idea for the eyeshadow box! I have tins I have been saving to do something with, now I have last minute gift ideas!
Did you make the eyeshadow to go in the tins? I have heard of recipes for mineral eyeshadow (supposed to be GREAT for your skin) and wondered if you did. If not, does anyone have any recipes for eyeshadow?
Thanks,
Robin
thanks for these wonderful instructions. I made 12 sets of marble magnets & tins for my friends & family, and your instructions were the best.
thank you very much!
The altered AOL tin is cool! You could make a customized music CD for a friend's birthday and give it to them in a decorated tin. Of course, you would be left with an empty CD case to be creative with :-)
