"Magic" Knit Headband

1. the photo isn't of my actual swatch (it's from another project done in the same yarn, just different dimensions). for my headband, though, i cast on 13 stitches and knit until i had enough rows to equal about 4 to 5 inches.

2. knit as many rows as you like keeping in mind that to finish this project, you will pull the knitting and it will end up being double the length. also, you can make it any width you like as well, just remember to cast on an odd amount of stitches.

3. when you reach your desired length you are ready to bind off as follows:

knit first stitch, drop second off needle. knit next stitch and slip the first stitch over that and off your needle (just like a normal bind off).

drop the next stitch off the needle. knit the next stitch and bind off. repeat this process to end (dropping every other stitch off needle).

4. after you have finished the bind off, pull the work lengthwise gently and let the drop stitches unravel through your work all the way to the first row (cast on row).
5. photo of resulting "lace" effect.
6. to make a connection from one end to the other and achieve a headband, i took the tail (which was about two feet long) from the end of the knitted swatch and weaved it from one side to the other of my last row and gathered it.

7. i put the headband on my head to see how much of a connector i needed to allow for. then, i repeated the weaving/gathering process at the other end of my swatch (the cast on row).

i had enough yarn left on my tail, so i just made several knots back along the connecting strap to make it a little sturdier. when i reached the end, i knotted it off.
