Knitty Gritty

there's a new-ish show on DIY about knitting named "knitty gritty." after getting past the trying-too-hard-to-be-hip-and-cool format of the show, it's really good. i missed the first few episodes, but i've still learned a lot from the show. for example, i learned another (easier and more economical) way of casting on that doesn't involve guessing the amount of yarn i'd need for my old long-tail cast on method. i also learned that i've mistakingly been referring to my latest baby blanket as "basketweave," when in fact it's actually called "checkerboard."

baby blanket part 2

i'm nearly done with my second adventure in knitting a blanket for a friend's baby. this baby, however is being adopted from russia, so it's going to be a bit bigger by the time it comes home with the proud parents. therefore, i'm knitting a pretty large blanket for him to grow in to. i'm really happy with it so far: knitting up quick, lovely pattern, super soft yarn. i may have to knit another one of these to keep around! here's an in progress photo. i'm knitting a tweaked checkerboard pattern based on a couple others i saw, but weren't exactly what i needed.

a political blog for everyone

devoter.com is a community blog project that focuces on discussing politics from all points of view. this will be a good place for me to stay informed on what's going on without having to worry about whether or not the source is entirely biased toward one particular party.

Jury Day

i took some photos while i was sitting at the courthouse on monday. i never made it beyond the meeting room to even be considered as a potential juror. at least i served my time and don't have to worry about the possibility of being called again for the next year.

i got served, i mean, summoned

i've got jury duty this week. for the first time in my life. i don't know how it works in other states, but here in california you are given a phone number to call in during your week of service. when you call it tells you whether or not your particular group number is to show up at the courthouse the following day. so, of course, when i called in i found out i have to report first thing monday morning at 730. blah. hopefully i'll serve my one day, without having to be put on an actual trial, and thus complete my required duty. but, with my luck i'll be downtown all week.
