thank you for the kind comments! yes, it was done on a circular needle -- i hate joining pieces, so if possible, i avoid it. ;)

the pattern is really simple -- to get the effect you just:

cast on 110. knit for about 2 inches.
k5 p20 k20 p20 k20 p20 k5.
next row k5 k20 p20 k20 p20 k20 k5.
alternate between these two rows for the length of the blanket.
knit for 2 inches and bind off.

I've cast on and pulled out the first 15 - 20 rows for a basketweave knitted baby blanket five times now and I'm going to start again and use this pattern--thanks for the much-needed inspiration!
