in a fit of craftiness, i took an empty jelly jar that had a nice shape and decoupaged some tissue paper onto it. it's a very economical project -- uses hardly any tissue paper (just a few inches worth probably), an old, clean jar and some decoupaging medium. it took maybe fifteen minutes to complete.
this isn't anything new, but i'll tell you how i did it anyway. i took strips of pink and yellow tissue paper, crumpled them up and tore them into small pieces. then, covered a section of the jar with the glue and placed a piece of tissue paper down and brushed more glue over the top of that. then, i laid the next piece on and went over it with more glue... repeated until the entire jar was covered, then i went over it again with another layer of glue. where i overlayed the pink on yellow (or vice-versa) is a nice orange color. i dropped a tea light in and lit it up, nice suttle glow.
the result is neat, but i'm not overly impressed. i think next time i will cut out an image and add it along with the tissue paper for something more interesting. or, make my tissue paper pieces much smaller than i did this time.

Wouldn't it be neat if the twisty top part of glass jars could be easily removed? I'm sure it can be done, but it seems a tad bit spooky!
I think your idea to add shapes would make the glow interesting...
it's definitely very ho-hum as is... i was thinking of toying with the top "twisty" part -- either adding some tissue paper on there, or maybe filling it in with... something... and attaching a ribbon or something.
i've seen examples where people cut out images and added them. that looked pretty cool. i even found some decorative tissue paper at target yesterday, for $2!, that had one edge lined in roses and another with green leaves. i didn't want to buy that much though... but, i bet it would be neat to cut out the leaves or roses and apply them with the coordinating color tissue.
i've got a lot more jars to experiment with...

It might pick up on the light and be a sparkly addition! Anything goes!*:) I've been making some beaded figures and the idea struck when I saw your candle jar, which I actually think a bunch of would be nice on a dining table!
Posted by: pt*:) at July 14, 2003 11:29 PMmmm... that sounds very good, actually. i can imagine wrapping the wire around, a bit wild like, and maybe even add a few crystal/clear beads to pick up even more sparkle!
must experiment! good idea, tina!

Posted by: milf at December 18, 2003 01:09 PMIt's a nice idea, but I found a problem, how do you put the candle into the jar? It's so dificult to burn it when is in, and more dificult if you have to pick up it when it's ignited and put it inside.
You'd have to use a long match, really?
Well, I was searching in my lumber room and I found some wire, so I made with it a support similary a spoon, to carry the tea candle. When you ignite the candle, you can down the spoon inside the jar. And there's no problem with the "spoon", because the wire is always cold.
Sorry for my bad english! :p
