the "yarn girls' guide" poncho. the first knitted item that i've completed by following a specific pattern. also my first wearable and neck shaping attempt. wahoo!
the pattern is from the book "the yarn girls' guide to simple knits." the pattern is called "easy, breezy, beautiful." be sure to check the yarn company's (the authors') website for book corrections, as this poncho pattern did have some.
Do you sell these?
Posted by: anabel at March 19, 2003 01:51 PMI've been looking for a poncho pattern forever! Is the poncho really thick/warm? Or is it more lightweight?
Posted by: mint at March 19, 2003 02:08 PManabel: i haven't had any opportunities to sell anything i've knitted, but i'd be more than happy to work something out with you!
mint: the poncho is fairly light, i used light yarns... the added fringe makes it a little heavier. and, it is warm. the book i used has about 3-4 poncho patterns in them, all fairly easy looking.

Posted by: Michelle at July 24, 2003 10:35 AMHi,
I have the book at home, but I am now faced with the following problem: How do I choose alternate yarn for the poncho?
I live in Ottawa, Ontario and I usually go to the following shop:
http://www.yarnfwd.com/ca/index.html
Also, I would be curious to know if it's really big. I want to knit this for my Mom for Christmas. We are both 5'2", so if it fits me, it fits her.
Thank you for your help,
Julie
Posted by: Julie La Salle at July 28, 2003 12:40 PMjulie: i'm not sure what you want to know about "alternate" yarn... i just picked two coordinating balls of yarn (a green and a white) and held them together like one yarn while knitting.
as far as it fitting you, i'm sure it would. the pattern is one size fits all. i'm 5'7" and a plus size and the only problem i have is that it's a little too short for me on the arms! but, i could solve that problem by just adjusting the pattern.
i think if you're 5'2" it should fit fine. :)
Hope that helps you out.
Posted by: Michelle at July 28, 2003 03:42 PMYou mentioned that there are corrections to the pattern on The Yarn Co. website. Do you know where on the website that information could be? I tried to look for it but with no luck. Thanks!
Posted by: Cindy at August 19, 2003 03:00 PMHi Cindy:
The information is listed on The Yarn Co.'s website at the very bottom of the front page under "Book Corrections" -- kind of hard to see, but the direct link is: book corrections (I think the link they actually have on the website is wrong right now). The corrections for the poncho are at the bottom of that page though.
I don't recall if there are a lot of changes/explanation, but the overall poncho experience wasn't that difficult to me (and I'm no expert knitter!). And, I did even email the owners/writers and asked them a question about the pattern and they replied back.
Posted by: Michelle at August 19, 2003 04:25 PMHi,
I have been looking for an "easy" poncho to knit for myself. I consider myself still a "beginner", although I have made quite a few hats, slippers, and a sleeveless vest.
Would you mind sharing this pattern? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Patti
Posted by: Patti at August 28, 2003 02:54 PMSorry, but it's a copyrighted pattern from a book, so I don't feel comfortable passing it around at random. You can always buy the book from Amazon. It's got some other lovely patterns in it for beginners and experts alike. Check it out: Yarn Girls' Guide To Simple Knits

I am making poncho from the Yarn Girls book and having problems with the neckline - do not want turtleneck on winter poncho - I need more detail for neckline - confused about "working each side of neck separately" should I have 6 stiches left on each side for a total or 12 stitches all together????

Posted by: maureen halvorsen at October 10, 2004 11:44 AMYou can purchase the book through Amazon.com here. I do not give out the pattern info for free.
Posted by: michelle at October 10, 2004 12:24 PMDo you remember how you worked the neck on this poncho? I am kniting this up from the same pattern and am confused as to how to do the neck. The pattern says to "work both sides of the neck separately," but I have no idea what this means! Now that the middle four stitches are bound off, I'm not sure if I just continue working one side of the neck, cut the yarn, and then reattach the yarn on the other side to finish, or if I'm supposed to do something else (i.e., without cutting off the yarn). Any help you might be able to give would be much appreciated. I hope my finished poncho turns out as nice as yours!

Check the book corrections page here: it has correction for the neck.
Also, if you're still confused you can email the authors from that site and ask for help/clarification -- I had to and they were pretty quick and very helpful.
Posted by: michelle at October 26, 2004 10:34 AMI am making the Yarn Girls' Easy Breezy Poncho and am having difficulty with the neck shaping. The pattern isn't too clear to me. Maybe it is to you, because your poncho looks terrific. Could you help me and tell me exactly how you shaped the neck? I'm the type that needs to be told to decrease when there are so many stitches left on the needle. The part about the 3 1/2" from the end and then doing the decrease doesn't make sense to me. Help! Thanks!
